Retirement Profile

Worked Example

A 30-year-old with Rs. 500,000 saved, investing Rs. 15,000 a month at 12% until 60, wants Rs. 100,000 a month in today's money. With 8% inflation that becomes Rs. 1,006,265.69 a month by 60, and paying it for 20 years at an 8% return needs about Rs. 120,303,381.70 at retirement. The plan would reach about Rs. 70,923,527.28, so the monthly saving needed rises to Rs. 28,988.97.

How to Interpret the Result

Inflation does most of the damage: at 8% a year, prices roughly double every nine years. Small changes in the return or the retirement age move the result a lot, so test several cases.

Common Mistakes

Ignoring inflation. Assuming high returns continue after retirement, when most people move to safer, lower-return investments. Leaving out healthcare costs and support for family.
