How to Open a CDC Account and Start Investing in PSX
To open a CDC account in Pakistan, choose an SECP-licensed PSX broker, fill in its account opening form with your CNIC and bank details, and complete KYC checks. The broker opens your CDC sub-account and NCCPL issues your Unique Investor Number (UIN), usually within a few business days. Since 9 February 2026, PSX trades settle in one business day.
Key takeaways
- You open a CDC account through a PSX broker licensed by the SECP. The broker sets up your CDC sub-account, and NCCPL issues your Unique Investor Number (UIN).
- You normally need a valid CNIC, a bank account in your own name, a mobile number registered to you and an email address.
- PSX moved to T+1 settlement on 9 February 2026, so shares you buy reach your CDC account one business day after the trade.
- For most listed companies, tax withheld on dividends in tax year 2027 is 15% if you are on FBR's Active Taxpayers List and 30% if you are not.
- Overseas Pakistanis can open an account online through a Roshan Digital Account.

What is a CDC Account and Why Do You Need One?
Before the Central Depository Company of Pakistan (CDC) existed, investors held paper share certificates that were easy to lose, damage or forge. CDC replaced them with electronic ownership: when you buy shares on the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX), they appear in your CDC account, much as money appears in a bank account.
There are three account types. A brokerage account is your trading account with a broker. A CDC sub-account holds your shares at CDC under your broker, and is opened when the broker activates your account. A CDC Investor Account holds your shares at CDC directly in your name, so they move only when you authorise it. Most beginners start with a brokerage account and sub-account; long-term holders often add an Investor Account for extra control.
What is a UIN?
Your UIN (Unique Investor Number) is issued by NCCPL, the National Clearing Company of Pakistan. It is linked to your CNIC and records your trades across every broker you use. You receive it automatically when your brokerage account is activated; there is no separate application.
Step 1: Choose a Licensed Broker
You cannot buy shares on the PSX directly. You need a broker that holds a PSX trading right (TREC) and is licensed by the SECP. Check the broker against the member list on the PSX website and the SECP's list of licensed securities brokers before you share any documents. Never open an account with a firm that is not on those lists, however attractive its offer.
Brokers differ more than beginners expect. SeekhKar does not rank or recommend brokers, but these are the questions worth asking:
- Licence: listed by PSX and the SECP. This is not negotiable.
- Account opening: fully online, or a branch visit.
- Costs: commission per trade, any minimum charge per order, and custody or account fees. Ask for the full schedule in writing.
- Trading app: limit orders, a clear portfolio view, and trade confirmations by SMS and email.
- Research: some brokers publish free research. Treat it as one opinion, not an instruction.
- Shariah-compliant accounts, if you need one.
- Complaints: how to reach support, and how to escalate to PSX or the SECP.
What Documents Do You Need?
For a resident individual account you normally need: your valid CNIC (front and back), proof of a bank account in your own name (a cheque or statement whose name matches your CNIC exactly), a mobile number registered in your name, and an email address for confirmations.
Depending on the amount you plan to invest and the broker's checks, you may also be asked for proof of income (salary slip, bank statement or tax return), a Zakat exemption declaration if it applies to you, proof of address if it differs from your CNIC, and nominee details. Naming a nominee is strongly recommended so your shares can pass to your family without delay.
The usual causes of delay are a mismatch between the name on your bank account and your CNIC, an expired CNIC, a mistyped IBAN (check all 24 characters), and a missing Zakat declaration when one applies.
Sahulat account: a simpler option
Many brokers offer a Sahulat account: a simplified account for smaller investors that needs only your CNIC and basic KYC details, with no proof of income. In return it carries an investment cap set by the regulator, so ask your broker for the current limit. If you later want to invest more, the broker will ask for income documents and convert the account.
How to Open a CDC Account, Step by Step
- Pick a licensed broker and start its account opening, online or at a branch.
- Fill in the Standardized Account Opening Form (SAOF) with details that match your CNIC exactly: bank IBAN, nominee, investment objectives and risk tolerance.
- Upload your CNIC, bank proof and any other documents requested.
- Complete KYC checks: NADRA verification, a confirmation call and, at some brokers, biometric verification.
- The broker registers you with NCCPL and CDC. You receive your UIN, CDC sub-account number, client ID and CDC Access login.
- Fund the account by bank transfer from your registered bank account. Cash deposits are not accepted.
- Log in to the broker's platform. Most accounts are active within a few business days.
How Do You Place Your First Trade?
Research before you buy: read the company's latest annual report and estimate its value with the methods in our stock valuation guide. Then choose an order type. A market order fills straight away at the best available price. A limit order fills only at your price or better, which suits value investors who have worked out what they are willing to pay.
In the broker's app, search for the ticker, enter the quantity (check your broker's minimum order size), choose the order type and review the total cost including commission and taxes before you confirm. Keep the trade confirmation you receive by SMS and email: it is your record of the trade.
The PSX moved from a T+2 to a T+1 settlement cycle on 9 February 2026, under a plan NCCPL announced to brokers in August 2025. Shares you buy are now settled into your CDC account one business day after the trade, and sales settle on the same timetable.
How to Choose Your First Stocks
SeekhKar does not tell you which stocks to buy, but a few rules help beginners avoid expensive mistakes:
- Start with businesses you understand and can explain in a sentence.
- Prefer larger, frequently traded companies, where buying and selling does not move the price.
- Read at least the latest annual report. Our annual report guide shows where the key numbers are.
- Estimate a value before you buy, and set a price you are willing to pay.
- Spread your money across several companies and sectors.
- Never buy on a tip from a WhatsApp or Telegram group, or from anyone promising guaranteed returns.
How Much Tax Do You Pay on PSX Investments?
Dividend tax. The company withholds tax before the dividend reaches you. Under FBR's withholding tax rates card for tax year 2027 (1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027, as set by the Finance Act 2026), the rates under section 150 are:
| Dividend paid by | On the Active Taxpayers List | Not on the list |
|---|---|---|
| Most listed companies | 15% | 30% |
| Independent power producers (IPPs) | 7.5% | 15% |
| A company paying no tax because of an exemption or carried-forward losses | 25% | 50% |
For example, on Rs 10,000 of dividends from an ordinary listed company, a filer receives Rs 8,500 after tax and a non-filer Rs 7,000. Our guide to dividend investing in Pakistan explains how to compare yields after tax.
Capital gains tax. When you sell at a profit, NCCPL calculates and collects capital gains tax through your broker. The rate depends on when you bought the shares and on your tax status, and it has changed in recent budgets. Check NCCPL's capital gains tax page for the table that applies to your purchase dates.
Trading costs. Brokerage commission, CDC and NCCPL charges, and taxes on the commission appear on every trade confirmation. Read them on your first trade so there are no surprises.

Why Filing a Tax Return Matters
Being on FBR's Active Taxpayers List halves the tax withheld on your dividends: 15% instead of 30% for most listed companies in tax year 2027. Filing an annual return online is usually straightforward for salaried people, and for anyone receiving regular dividends the saving adds up quickly.
Overseas Pakistanis: Investing Through a Roshan Digital Account
Overseas Pakistanis can invest in PSX shares without visiting Pakistan through the Roshan Digital Account (RDA) system:
- Open an RDA online with a participating bank, using your NICOP or passport and a foreign bank account.
- In the RDA portal, choose the Roshan Equity Investment option and consent to sharing your details with CDC and NCCPL.
- Pick a broker from those connected to the scheme.
- Receive your CDC account, UIN and broker login.
- Move funds from your RDA to the equity investment account and start investing.
PSX's Roshan Equity Investment page lists the current steps and participating firms.
Common Beginner Mistakes
- Depositing cash instead of transferring from your registered bank account.
- A name mismatch between your CNIC and bank account.
- Not keeping trade confirmations.
- Buying without estimating what the company is worth.
- Handing control of your account to someone else (discretionary trading).
- Not naming a nominee.
- Staying off the Active Taxpayers List and paying double the tax on every dividend.
- Selling in a panic. Share prices can fall sharply for months at a time, and selling at the bottom turns a temporary fall into a permanent loss.
What to Do After Your Account Is Activated
Log in to CDC Access with the credentials CDC sends you, check your details, and turn on SMS and email alerts so you see every movement in your account. Confirm your nominee. Before your first purchase, shortlist a few companies in sectors you understand, read their latest reports and estimate a value for each. Then keep a simple record of every purchase (date, price, quantity and costs) so you know your cost basis for tax and can track dividends; SeekhKar's portfolio tracker does this privately in your browser.
