Freelance Rate Calculator

Determine the ideal hourly and daily rates you need to charge clients based on your desired income, expenses, and billable time.

Financial Targets

Formula

Pre-Tax Target = (Desired Income + Expenses) / (1 − Tax Rate) Total Billable Hours = Billable Hours/Week × Weeks Worked/Year Hourly Rate = Pre-Tax Target / Total Billable Hours

Worked Example

To keep Rs. 2,400,000 a year after Rs. 300,000 of business costs and 10% set aside for tax, you need Rs. 3,000,000 before tax. Billing 30 hours a week for 46 weeks (1,380 hours) means charging Rs. 2,173.91 an hour, or Rs. 17,391.30 for an 8-hour day.

How to Interpret the Result

Billable hours are fewer than working hours: admin, finding clients and holidays take time you cannot charge for. Export income from IT services can be taxed differently from local income, so check your position with the income tax calculator.

Common Mistakes

Pricing as if every working hour is billable. Forgetting platform and payment fees. Not saving for tax and for slow months.
